San Juan Islands Ferry
October 5-8, 2020
We spent the first night in the beautiful town of Anacortes, WA which is where you get the ferry to the San Juan Islands. We were scheduled for the 11:20AM ferry to Orcas Island the next day where we would experience something we have never experienced before – driving our car onto a ferry. My research showed some recommending walking onto the ferry and renting a car instead of dealing with traveling with your own car. We decided to roll with a new experience and took our car. We are glad we did, it was cheap and easy. We paid $58 for our car and the 3 of us to board and it was free for the return trip. We just rolled up to the toll booth an hour before ferry departure, gave them our reservation name, got in the lane they directed us to and waited our turn to load. On Orcas Island we stayed in a beautiful water front hotel, Outlook Inn, in the quaint little town of Eastsound. To be honest, there wasn’t many shops or restaurants open. I think this was mostly due to the season and not Covid but really not sure. The highlight of the trip was the view from the top of Mt. Constitution in Moran State Park. Cloud cover was thick at lower elevations but once we got to the top of the mountain the view was clear to Mt. Baker but you could not see the sound due to the cloud cover. Regardless a beautiful view. The San Juan Islands are very popular in the summer months and I can see why. However, we enjoyed our more quiet experience.
